Femke Brouwer is the designer and creator of Maple Forest Toys, beautifully handcrafted natural toys to enhance imaginative play. After four years living in New York, Femke and her family moved back to Amsterdam and continued the Maple Forest story.
“I’ve always had a big imagination. As a little girl, I spent my days dreaming up stories, drawing, creating puppets for friends, and sewing my own wardrobe. That childlike enthusiasm never left me, and now my own kids have rekindled my passion for the creative. After ending my job as a child psychologist to move to New York with my family, I started searching for different ways to fulfill my ambitions. Once settled in my new home, I began working on my idea for Maple Forest.
I wanted to make something that was warm and inviting, igniting imaginative play while also looking pretty. I started to let my ideas run freely and soon six woodland creatures were born, all inspired by my passion for fables and fairytales. And combined with my love for watercolors (especially Turner), slowly but surely Maple Forest began to come to life.”
Femke hand makes all the inhabitants of Maple Forest. The body is a watercolor design printed on Spoonflower‘s Minky fabric. Minky is super soft to touch and washes well for repeated play. Spoonflower uses inks that are environmentally friendly. The fabrics are digitally printed, this way no ink is wasted and there is no need for water. Arms, legs, ears, and tails are made from Robert Kaufman Fabrics: Flannel and Kona Cotton (Oeko-Tex). Both are 100% cotton. The dust bags that accompany the dolls are a 100% cotton with Oeko-Tex label. The animals are stuffed with hypoallergenic fiber fill. Washable and doesn’t clot.
