The Maker Series: Betty Friday

Jul 31, 2017 | The Maker Series

We love finding products for babies and children that are fun, beautiful and promote learning. Betty Friday does just that! Danika MIlligan, the owner of Betty Friday, designs and makes her own range of Flash Cards, Educational Cards, Prints and Wall Posters for little ones. We spoke to Danika about how her business got started, what inspires her and the art of creating mindful resources for kids.

1. Tell us a little bit about you, your family and where you live?

My little family and I live in the beautiful coastal town of Newcastle, NSW, Australia. My husband and I have a gorgeous (and very busy) little boy called Arlo who is now 18 months old. I’ve been a Graphic Designer for nearly eight years and up until I had Arlo, I ran production and designed for a Signage & Digital Printing company. We have lived in our house for six years now and most of those years we have spent renovating. The joys of being married to a builder!

2. Tell us more about the creation of your business?

When Arlo was first born, I found myself wanting to create things for him when I had some down time. It started off with a set of Milestone Cards early on, followed by an Animal Alphabet poster to hang in his room. Every time I finished creating something for him, I moved on to the next thing and found myself really enjoying exploring the concepts of how children learn. After receiving really positive responses from other people about my designs, my husband encouraged me to design a whole range and launch my own children’s business!

3. What inspired you to focus your business on products for children?

I find it incredibly refreshing designing products for children. My ideas are always inspired by Arlo, and I love testing my ideas on him and seeing his little face light up when I show him the flash cards. Children are so engaged by bright colours and small details, and I think we’ve managed to find a really great balance between both of those things and simplicity.

4. What do you love most about running your own business?

Running my own business allows me to create products that I am proud of, and I love nothing more than seeing my cards or posters being used in other people’s homes with their children. My theory is that if I have not yet been able to find a particular product that I am looking for and love, then I have the flexibility to create my own for everyone else to also enjoy.

5. Where do you get the inspiration from for your beautiful designs?

I have always loved very simple and clean design. I think this is especially important in children’s educational products to make learning easier. I have a beautiful friend who is a primary school teacher, who helped to guide me in the skills which children should have by the time they reach school age. My range in currently based around that set of skills. I also have a passion for Interior Design, so I make sure that I would be more than happy to proudly display my posters and prints in my own home! I collaborate with some very talented Illustrators, who I often use as my inspiration to design for my next range.
